Kaushalya hugged Sita. She was upset that Sita was enduring so much mental and physical hardship in the forest. "O lotus-faced one, you have withered," she said to Sita. "Your golden aura has become somber. Seeing your pitiful situation, my mind is troubled. How will a beautiful young princess like you live in this forest?"
Rama addressed Bharata and said, "As per Queen Kaikeyi's first boon, you are now the king of Ayodhya. Why are you not fulfilling your royal duties?"
"I refuse to ascend the throne, which rightfully belongs to you," said Bharata. "That is why we have come to take you back home. In our dear father's absence, the people of Ayodhya are helpless. They need a strong and just king, and only you can remove the darkness that has enveloped Ayodhya. Brother, do us a favor and return to Ayodhya with us."
"Dear Bharata, I can never violate Father's boons to Queen Kaikeyi. If I don't follow his command, even the splendor of all three worlds will not give me happiness. Since Lakshmana is by my side, I fear nothing."
Rama was firm as a rock in his decision, so Bharata reluctantly agreed.
"Since Father is no more, you are now my father," he said. "Your wish is my command, and I will obey it. But please give me your sandals; I will place them on the throne and rule Ayodhya in your name until you return."
Rama gave his sandals to Bharata, who placed them on his head as a sign of reverence and returned to Ayodhya. He installed them on the throne while ruling merely as Rama's representative.
