There once lived a swan on the bank of a lake. One day, an owl arrived at the bank. The two birds became great friends and lived happily together.
A few months later, summer came.
"It's too hot for me here. I'm going home and would like you to accompany me," said the owl.
"The summer heat will eventually cause the lake to dry up," replied the swan. "I will come to you then."
The owl then flew back home.
A few weeks later, the lake dried up, as the swan had predicted. The swan then went to the banyan tree where the owl lived. Every day, the swan went to sleep well before dark.
One night, some wandering travelers came to rest beneath the tree. Upon seeing them, the owl got scared and screeched. Considering this an ill omen, the angry travelers shot arrows at the owl. But the owl, who could see in the dark, escaped the arrows and flew away. Unfortunately, a stray arrow happened to hit the sleeping swan, who died instantly.
One must always be alert in a new place.
