Tenali Rama was ferrying a scholar across a river. During their conversation, Rama made a grammatical error.
"Haven't you studied grammar?" asked the scholar.
Rama replied that he had not.
"Then half your life has been wasted," said the scholar with contempt.
Rama remained silent. A little later, Rama turned to the scholar and said, "Do you know how to swim?"
"No," replied the scholar.
"Then your whole life has been wasted. A storm is approaching, and your grammar will not help you survive."
The scholar realized that he had behaved arrogantly and begged Rama to help him. Rama was a good swimmer. He carried the scholar and swam to the shore. The scholar then apologized profusely to Rama and thanked him for saving his life.
