Bhishma then turned to Dhritarashtra and said, "O King, you must behave in a respectable manner. Respect is power; without respect, life is equivalent to death. You have already tarnished the image of the Kauravas. Even though the Varanavata plot was Duryodhana's idea, people think you bear ultimate moral responsibility. Also, abandon the idea of attacking Panchala. Do not underestimate King Drupada and his son."
Drona and Kripacharya also expressed similar sentiments.
However, Karna did not accept what they said. "Elders like Bhishma and Drona are adopting a soft stance. If you take their advice, you will never obtain your rights. The kingdom and your fate are intertwined. If you are destined to become king, you will become one regardless of how many obstacles stand in your way."
Drona did not like Karna's ideas at all. He said, "If our advice is not heeded, the destruction of the Kauravas is certain."
Vidura offered his counsel to Dhritarashtra: "Bhishma and Drona love you and are always concerned about your welfare. It is in your best interest to take their advice. A war with the Pandavas will result in disaster."
Dhritarashtra decided to act on Bhishma and Drona's advice and redeem his reputation. "We will give the sons of Pandu a grand welcome," said Dhritarashtra. "They too have a right to the kingdom." He told Vidura to give the Pandavas, Kunti, and Draupadi expensive gifts and escort them back to Hastinapura.
