Shanta-Shil led Vikram and his son into a shrine that contained a frightful statue of Goddess Durga. He drew a sword from within his clothes, hid it behind his back, and told the king to bow before the statue.
Vikram suddenly remembered what the Vampire had whispered in his ear. He said, "As a king, I do not know how to bow before someone. Please show me, and I will follow suit."
Despite all his cunning, the devotee bent down to salute his goddess. Vikram then drew his own sword and struck Shanta-Shil's neck with a blow so hard that his head was instantly severed and fell to the ground.
Just then, Indra, the king of the gods, appeared in the sky and asked Vikram to make a wish.
"Let this adventure of mine become famous throughout the world," said Vikram.
Indra granted the boon and vanished. Vikram and his son returned to the palace, where he reigned over the world for several years. After he died, he left a name behind him that endures even to this day.
