The emperor once sentenced Tenali Rama to death. But thanks to the help of one of the royal guards, unbeknownst to the emperor, Tenali managed to escape. After returning home, Tenali told his mother and wife to request money for household expenditures from the emperor. The pair went to the palace and wept before the emperor.
"Emperor, Tenali used to take care of the household expenses. What are we going to do now?" said Tenali's mother.
"Emperor, how could you have been so heartless? I have a young son; what's going to become of him now?" said Tenali's wife.
The emperor was filled with guilt. He consoled the women and gave each of them a hundred gold coins. He also ordered that the family be given a monthly pension of twenty gold coins. The two returned home and gave Tenali the gold coins they had received from the emperor.
Later, Tenali went to the emperor and told him how he had escaped. The emperor was glad to learn that Tenali was alive and reinstated him as a minister.
