An ominous silence filled the hall. Staking one's wife in a game of dice was unheard of at the time. The elders of the Kuru clan sat helplessly.
"Very well, I stake Draupadi," said Yudhishthira in a tone filled with despair.
Some of the spectators murmured among themselves. Bhishma, Drona, and Kripacharya hung their heads in shame. Vidura hid his face in his hands. Karna and Dushasana began to laugh boisterously.
The game continued for some time.
"I have won Draupadi," Shakuni suddenly yelled jubilantly.
"Bring the Pandavas' wife here. We have won her, and she is now our slave," Duryodhana declared to Vidura.
"Don't test the patience of the Pandavas," warned Vidura. "Draupadi cannot be your slave. Yudhishthira had already lost himself. How could he have the right to stake his wife when he was no longer his own master? Kunti's sons have always extended a hand of friendship towards you. Avoid facing their wrath. They are capable of defeating even Indra and Varuna. Deception and trickery have been used in this game. However, explaining all this to you is futile."
